T O P I C R E V I E WNC Apollo FanNot long ago CNN had a poll on whether or not we should carry out a manned expedition to Mars. I was rather dismayed by the results, as the vast majority felt that it would not be a worthwhile investment (something like 70-80% were opposed to it).Obviously public opinion can change dramatically given the right set of circumstances, but it struck me as being a sad comment on general interest in manned space exploration. One can always hope that the Chinese are serious about getting to the moon - perhaps that will stir the population into thinking that we should 'do them one better.' I was born in 1970 and thus have no recollection of Apollo - and now I wonder if we will make it to Mars in my lifetime.Did anyone else notice the poll? Were you as surprised as I was that interest was so low?JonathanScottThat is sad. I would chalk it up to the fact that people are not confident that it would actually GET DONE and thereby see it as a monumental way to waste money. With the current crowd running NASA, it would probably end up costing $100 trillion, take 3 times longer than they said it would take and then be cancelled before it flew.[This message has been edited by Scott (edited August 08, 2003).]
